Easter traditions in Hungary
There are many customs on Easter and most of them celebrate the spring and rebirth. In Hungary, Easter is celebrated with these amazing folk customs. We would like to show you the most popular traditions in Hungary.
Easter Sunday
This is the day, when Easter bunny brings candy, coloured eggs, toys and other gifts in a basket. The bunny usually hide these presents somewhere in the house, and children have to find it in the morning. Lily flower is also very popular in the country, because this is the symbol of purity and fertility. People usually use lily for decoration.
Easter eggs and meals
Women usually prepare for the holiday in the previous days by cleaning up the house, decorating, cooking and painting a lot of eggs. Traditional Easter meals include boiled eggs, smoked ham, horseradish, potato salad and other vegetables.
Easter Monday
On Easter Monday, boys visited girls, recited a poem and doused them with a bucket of water which symbolize fertility. Girls, in return, rewarded them with candy or eggs. Nowadays, boys sprinkle parfume on girls instead of the bucket of water, and girls reward them with alcohol or money.
