Most banks allow foreigners to open an account with just the presentation of a passport, but some banks also require a valid residence permit and/or a tax card. Banks charge a fee for openning a bank account and issuing a bank card.
ATMs
Most banks have ATMs, which work quite similarly to those in the States. Assuming that you have a bank account and a confidential four-digit PIN code, you can get cash 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Money can be withdrawn from any bank. 2 withdrawals are free of charge at any ATM till 150 000 HUF, but after that, you will be slapped with a transaction fee at all ATMs. Fee amounts vary, but it is less if you use the ATM of your own bank. Making purchase with the card, however, should be free of charge. The vast majority of ATMs have English menus.
